How I made UGX 1.2M from this blog last month

1

I have been blogging since 2018, but honestly not until last month, there was nothing much I could show for it. Of course I have made some money along the way, accumulated mentions in the media, got interviewed on blogs, got nominated for several bloggers’ awards and built reputation around my name as a credible blogger.

But when I look at all I have achieved, nothing really stands out. This is probably attributed to the fact that I have been doing blogging as a hobby and not for money. I have been blogging only when I feel like and maximizing on opportunities only when they come.

I have also previously intentionally ignored the strategies of successful bloggers and tried to forge my own unique way of making it in the industry but it turned out to be a bad idea.

I have also been jumping from topic to topic and I never established myself as an authority in any niche; the proverbial Jack of all trades.

All these mistakes have cost me a lot of time and effort considering the peanut income I have made from this blog in the past 4years.

To some people, UGX 1.2M might seem good enough for them, but for a person like me who has been in the blogging game for years, that’s a failure.

I have witnessed jaw-dropping incomes Ugandan top bloggers are earning and the lives they live, the investments they have made out of blogging and the unlimited traveling they lead, which honestly makes me feel that I deserve to be on the same level or even better.

For that reason, I’m taking this leap of faith to shift my attitude towards blogging and make it a full-time business not doing it has a hobby as it has been previously. This not only has to work, but it will work out very well.

This first income report serves several purposes

First, it is a revelation that there’s money in blogging as a business. However, without good monetization strategies, there’s not much you can exploit.

Secondly, it is my very first step into shifting my attitude towards blogging as a hobby to blogging as a business. I need to account for every coin that comes in from this blog.

Thirdly, it is a way to keep myself accountable. This report shows you the growth and monetization strategies that have worked for me, what needs to be implemented and how I plan to grow from this point forward.

I’m inviting whoever wishes to make blogging a full-time job to join me in this journey so we can share strategies and encourage each other to grow.

Let’s get started…

My Last Month’s Income – Money blogging Uganda

Last month was quite an interesting month for me following my decision to start blogging for money. From the time I started this blog 4 years ago, I have been blogging as a hobby and I never considered blogging for business. Last month I monetized my blog through Google AdSense and offering consultation services. As you can see in the table below, most of my income came from Ads.

Below are my earnings for last month.

Program Earnings in UGX
Google AdSense 720,000/-
Consultations 480,000/-
Total 1,200,000/-

My Takeaways

One thing to note is the fact that there was a spike in my earnings between 8th and 20th of last month. This happened following two of my articles that went viral thus increasing my earnings. Remember in blogging, Traffic = Money. The more traffic you get, the more money you make.

This month’s income was given a push by one article which later lost traffic as soon as it became irrelevant. This means I need to create more evergreen content to increase my daily earnings consistently.

Currently my blog heavily relies on Google advertisements to bring income, which is a very risky strategy. If by any bad luck Google wakes up one morning and makes an update that negatively impacts my blog, I could lose everything.

In the coming month, I plan to diversify my monetization strategy by incorporating additional monetization strategies such as affiliate marketing, web design and guest posting to reduce reliance on one income stream.

Strategies for next month

There are various things I will put focus on this coming month with the main goal being increasing my daily page views from 1500 to 2000. This increase will not only increase my monthly earnings but also open opportunities for my blog to grow.

Specifically I will;

  1. Write 15 pillar (long form) articles and outsource 20 short articles.
  2. Write and outsource 5 guest posts for purposes of backlink building
  3. Join at least 5 affiliate programs that relate with my blog niche
  4. Publish 5 How-to videos on my YouTube channel

Those are my top 4 priorities for next month. I believe achieving every bit of these goals will catapult me to where I want to be within a not far time.
